Onward Christian Soldier
We are often so excited by the allure of glory and fame, and rightly so, for God Himself has promised, “I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth” – Zeph. 3:20. However, it is important to remember that every jewel destined to shine must first endure the refining flames of the furnace. The journey to glory was never promised to be rosy; “You therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who has chosen him to be a soldier” – 2 Tim. 2:3-4.
The road is sure to be marked with challenges, but through these trials, character is forged, endurance is built, clarity of purpose is discovered, and discipline is perfected. True glory is birthed in the process, not just in the promise. George Washington once said, “Discipline is the soul of an army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success to the weak, and esteem to all”. Joel 2:7: “They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march everyone on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks”.
Two key insights are obtainable from the above scriptures (Joel 2:7 & 2 Tim. 2:3-4). First, training and rigour: “You therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ/They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war”. Hardness does not kill; it only strengthens. ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ without relevant training and exercise will be wishing without knowing. It takes mortifying the flesh to cultivate the fruits of the Spirit.
Focus and discipline: “No man that wars entangles himself with the affairs of this life/and they shall march everyone on his ways”. Soldiers don’t get distracted by civilian affairs, as those on a divine mission. It requires the ability to resist distractions, prioritise purpose over pleasure, and maintain a clear vision. Focus sharpens our path, while discipline keeps us moving, amid challenges and opposition.
The kingdom of God is like unto a man who enlisteth in an army: who, when hath been chosen, forsaketh all and prepareth for a battle (Don’t ask what passage of the Bible). Are you prepared? And to those yet to be enlisted, the Host awaits your response to the clarion call.
