1. Scope and who we are
This Privacy Policy applies to the Word Intelligence website, account system, newsletters, comments, contact forms and related services available through wordintel.org (together, the “Service”).
Word Intelligence is a Christian editorial and community platform operated from Nigeria. In this Policy, “Word Intelligence”, “we”, “us” and “our” refer to the operator of the Service. For personal data processed through the Service, Word Intelligence acts as the data controller unless this Policy states otherwise.
Questions, requests and complaints may be sent to hello@wordintel.org or through our Contact page.
2. Personal data we collect
2.1 Information you provide directly
Depending on how you use the Service, this may include:
- Account information: your name, email address, password in hashed form, email-verification status, account role and account-security records.
- Community content: comments, replies, likes and other material you choose to submit, together with the account associated with that activity.
- Newsletter information: your email address, where the subscription was submitted, subscription status, confirmation and unsubscribe dates, and delivery history.
- Contact information: your name, email address, subject and message when you contact us.
- Administrative content: posts, images and account-management records submitted by authorised members of the Word Intelligence team.
2.2 Information collected automatically
When you access or use the Service, our systems may process your internet protocol address, browser and device information, requested pages, date and time of access, referring page, session identifiers, security events and application error logs.
Newsletter subscription records may also include the IP address and browser user-agent used when the request was submitted. These details help us prevent abuse, troubleshoot delivery and maintain an auditable confirmation process.
4. How we use personal data
We process personal data to:
- create, verify, authenticate and secure accounts;
- provide comments, likes and other community features;
- publish and administer Word Intelligence content;
- respond to enquiries and provide support;
- send confirmation messages and newsletters you requested, and honour unsubscribe choices;
- detect fraud, unauthorised access, spam, abuse and technical faults;
- maintain, troubleshoot, measure and improve the Service;
- enforce our Terms of Service and protect users, Word Intelligence and third parties; and
- comply with applicable legal obligations.
5. Lawful bases for processing
Depending on the activity and applicable law, we rely on one or more of the following bases:
- Contract: processing necessary to create and operate your account or provide a feature you requested.
- Consent: for optional activities such as newsletters and any processing for which consent is required.
- Legitimate interests: maintaining security, preventing abuse, improving the Service, communicating about the Service and protecting legal rights, where those interests are not overridden by your rights.
- Legal obligation: retaining or disclosing information where applicable law validly requires it.
- Legal claims and vital interests: where processing is reasonably necessary to establish, exercise or defend claims, or to protect a person’s vital interests.
8. International data transfers
Some service providers operate infrastructure outside Nigeria. Consequently, personal data may be processed in other countries. Where applicable, we use recognised transfer safeguards, contractual protections and other lawful mechanisms, and we take reasonable steps to ensure an adequate level of protection.
9. Data retention
We retain personal data only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, including providing the Service, maintaining security, resolving disputes, enforcing agreements and meeting legal obligations.
- Account information is generally retained while the account is active and for a limited period afterward where required for security, backup, dispute or legal purposes.
- Comments and other submissions may remain until removed by you or us, or until the associated account or content is deleted, subject to legitimate moderation and record-keeping needs.
- Newsletter records are retained while you are subscribed. We may keep a minimal suppression record after unsubscribe so we can honour your choice and avoid sending further messages.
- Security logs, sessions and backups are retained for limited operational periods and then deleted, overwritten or anonymised when no longer needed.
10. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational safeguards, including encrypted HTTPS connections, password hashing, signed or time-limited links, session controls, access restrictions, provider-protected authentication and maintained application software. No online system can be guaranteed completely secure.
You are responsible for using a strong, unique password, protecting your device and provider accounts, and notifying us promptly if you suspect unauthorised access.
11. Your privacy rights
Subject to the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and other applicable law, you may have the right to:
- ask whether and how we process your personal data;
- request access to a copy of your personal data;
- correct inaccurate or incomplete data;
- request deletion where there is no lawful reason to retain it;
- request restriction of processing in appropriate cases;
- object to certain processing based on legitimate interests;
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing already lawfully carried out;
- request data portability where the legal conditions apply; and
- complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission or another competent supervisory authority.
To exercise a right, email hello@wordintel.org. We may request information necessary to verify your identity and protect the account. Some requests may be limited where retention is required by law or necessary to protect another person’s rights.
12. Children
Word Intelligence articles may be read by a general audience, but account registration, comments and other interactive features are not directed to children under 18 unless a parent or legal guardian has provided valid consent and appropriate supervision.
We do not knowingly create or maintain an interactive account for a child without the consent required by applicable law. A parent or guardian who believes a child submitted personal data without proper permission should contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
13. Changes to this Policy and contact
We may update this Policy when the Service, our providers or legal requirements change. The revised version will be posted here with a new “Last updated” date. Where a change materially affects how we use personal data, we will provide an appropriate additional notice.
Privacy enquiries, rights requests and complaints may be sent to:

3. Google and Microsoft sign-in
You may choose to create or access a Word Intelligence account using Google or Microsoft. These providers authenticate you and return limited identity information needed to operate your Word Intelligence account.
3.1 Google data
When you continue with Google, we may receive your Google account’s stable identifier, verified email address, display name and profile image. We use this information to identify returning users, create or safely connect a Word Intelligence account, display basic profile information and protect the sign-in process.
3.2 Microsoft data
When you continue with Microsoft, we may receive your Microsoft account’s stable identifier, a usable email address or user principal name, display name and, where available, profile image. We use this information to identify returning users, create a Word Intelligence account, display basic profile information and protect the sign-in process.
3.3 What we do not access
Word Intelligence does not receive your Google or Microsoft password. Our present social-authentication implementation does not request access to the contents of Gmail, Google Drive, Google Contacts, Google Calendar, Outlook email, OneDrive, Microsoft contacts or Microsoft calendars.
We do not sell Google or Microsoft account data, use it for advertising, or permit human access to it except where reasonably necessary for security, support, legal compliance or with your instruction.
Word Intelligence’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will comply with the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements, to the extent that policy applies to the scopes used by the Service.
Google and Microsoft process information under their own privacy terms when you use their sign-in services. Removing Word Intelligence from your provider account may stop future provider access, but it does not automatically erase the Word Intelligence account or records already lawfully retained by us. Contact us to request account deletion.
